W&L Women's Soccer Loses First Game, 3-1, To Virginia Wesleyan

NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 23 Washington and Lee women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-1, to No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

The Marlins (6-1-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 7:38 gone-by when sophomore Kristen Byrnes scored off a pass from junior Danielle Burns. Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 2-0 when senior Keren Larkin found the back of the Generals net off a feed from freshman Megan Clark at 23:00.

W&L (4-1-2, 3-1) closed to within 2-1 at the 37:13 mark when senior defender Kelley Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) took a pass from sophomore forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and fired it into the back of the Marlins goal.

Virginia Wesleyan went into the locker room with a 2-1 lead and senior Sharon Hay ended the scoring on a goal at 55:11.

W&L senior goalkeeper Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) made two saves while freshman Lindsey Williams stopped three shots for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Generals, 14-8, and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Washington and Lee returns to the field on Sunday at Chowan. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
