W&L Field Hockey Earns First Win with 5-3 Victory Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Senior midfielder Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines) scored two goals to help propel the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 5-3 win over ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite on Friday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.

Murphy started the scoring for the Generals (1-4, 1-1) on an unassisted goal at the 7:49 mark. The score remained 1-0 until junior midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) received a pass from freshman midfielder Kat Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and put it in the back of the Royals' goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half. The Generals extended their lead to 3-0 when Beall put a pass on the stick of junior forward Elisabeth Putney (Richmond, Va./Episcopal), who fired it past Eastern Mennonite junior goalkeeper, Christina Bender.

The Royals (1-7, 1-2) scored three of the next four goals, including two by senior Lisa Ehst, to cut the Generals lead to 4-3. This was a close as EMU would get as Murphy ended the scoring on a goal with just under five minutes left in the game.

W&L junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) made six saves while Bender stopped three shots for the Royals.

EMU outshot the Generals, 21-11, and had a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday at ODAC-rival Bridgewater. The game begins at 4:30 pm.
