W&L Field Hockey Defeated by Lynchburg, 3-1, in ODAC-Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team opened up its ODAC schedule with a 3-1 loss to Lynchburg College on Tuesday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

Both teams had a number of scoring chances throughout the first half but were held off of the scoreboard until the Hornets (5-1, 1-0) broke through on a penalty stroke by sophomore midfielder Morgan Crandall at the 30:29 mark. Lynchburg took the 1-0 lead into halftime and quickly made it 2-0 just 1:20 into the second half on goal by junior forward Kara Culkin. Lynchburg extended its lead to 3-0 when sophomore midfielder Lindsay Wheatley scored off a feed from junior forward Amanda Collison.

The Generals (0-4, 0-1) cut the deficit to 3-1 on an unassisted goal by freshman defenseman Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) with 11 minutes remaining but W&L wouldn't get any closer.

W&L junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) played all 70 minutes and made a season-high 12 saves. Lynchburg senior goalkeeper Joanne Yednock stopped 18 shots in the win.

Both teams fired off 20 shots while the Generals held a 16-11 advantage in penalty corners.

Washington and Lee returns to the field on Friday at ODAC-rival Eastern Mennonite. The game begins at 5:30 pm.
