W&L Field Hockey Falls to Johns Hopkins, 2-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team opened up its 2004 season with a 2-0 loss to Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at the W&L turf field.

The Blue Jays (1-2) got on the scoreboard at the 15:43 mark on a goal by sophomore Leah Dudley (Westborough, mass./Westborough). Dudley's score was assisted by junior Meighan Roose (Baltimore, Md./York). Johns Hopkins held the Generals without a shot in the first half and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Washington and Lee (0-1) picked up its offense in the second half when it fired off all six of their shots and had all five of its penalty corners but it couldn't find the back of the goal.

Johns Hopkins put the game away when junior Caite Kappel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored off a feed from sophomore Jamie Zubrow (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) at the 55:36 mark.

Washington and Lee junior goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played a half and combined to make five saves. Blue Jays junior goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) needed to make only one save to secure the shutout victory.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 when it travels to Pennsylvania to play Muhlenberg College. The game begins at 3:00 pm.
