LEXINGTON, Va. -- Guilford College took the lead with 11:38 remaining and never looked back in defeating Washington and Lee, 89-78, in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The game featured 12 ties and 16 lead changes until the Quakers (3-3, 1-2) assumed the control on a three-pointer by freshman forward Kerry Atkinson (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) at the 11:38 mark. The game remained within reach for W&L until Guilford hit 17-of-19 free throw attempts in the final 5:05 of the game to pull away. Guilford shot 60.0 percent (15-for-25) in the second half and hit 26-of-39 free throws for the game.
Washington and Lee (0-9, 0-4) placed five players in double-figures led by freshman forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman forward Femi Kusimo (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) tallied 15 points and seven boards, while sophomore guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) posted 13 points and a game-high six assists. Freshmen Colton Braud (Houston, Texas/James Taylor) and John Mumper (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) both notched 11 points.
Guilford was paced by sophomore guard Jordan Snipes (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) and junior forward Genaro Lawhorn (Greensboro, N.C./Oak Ridge Military), who tallied 15 points apiece.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sun., Jan. 2 when it hosts the W&L Tournament. Washington College will meet Marymount at 6:00 pm, while W&L plays Piedmont at 8:00 pm.
