ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 30-28, 30-25, 30-23 win over Maryville on Thursday evening at Emory University.
The Generals (28-7) were paced by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who had nine kills and 25 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) had 11 kills and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) had 12 kills. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) added seven kills, 12 digs and four blocks, and junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 40 assists and nine digs.
With the loss, Maryville fell to 29-8 overall for the season.
Washington and Lee will face host Emory (29-9) in a second round match on Friday at 7:00 pm. In the other regional semifinal, top-seeded Trinity (Texas) squares off against Texas Lutheran, a 3-0 winner over Christopher Newport. The regional final will be played on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
