DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team upped its record to 14-4 overall with a pair of wins in the first day of the Averett Invitational on Friday evening. The Generals defeated Meredith College, 30-16, 30-17, 30-15, before defeating the host Cougars, 30-18, 30-13, 30-14.
In the win over Meredith (4-9), the Generals were led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 13 kills and four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 11 kills and junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) totaled six kills and seven digs. Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) recorded 35 assists.
In the victory over Averett (15-5), W&L was paced by junior middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), who registered nine kills and seven blocks. Wolfing tallied 10 kills and 14 digs, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added 10 kills. Gladysz amassed 38 assists and five service aces.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday in the second day of the Averett Invitational. The Generals take on Queens at 11:30 am and Randolph-Macon at 1:30 pm.
