DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team lost a pair of matches in the second day of the Centre Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Generals fell to eighth-ranked Mt. St. Joseph, 30-21, 30-22, 30-27, and then were defeated by Thomas More, 30-28, 24-30, 30-28, 30-20.
In the loss to Mt. St. Joseph, W&L was led by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who totaled 12 kills and nine digs. Junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) both tallied nine kills, while junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 37 assists and five digs.
In the loss to Thomas More, the Generals were again paced by Wolfing, who totaled 16 kills and 17 digs. Junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 10 kills, while Gladysz notched 43 assists, five blocks and three aces.
The Generals (24-7) return to action on Friday as they compete in the ODAC Volleyball Tournament hosted by Guilford College. W&L will be the top seed and will face eighth-seeded Randolph-Macon Woman's College at a time to be determined.
