BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Sophomore tailback Winston Young rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries to lead Bridgewater past Washington and Lee, 34-7, in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field.
A pair of Young touchdown runs sandwiched around a 60-yard scoring strike from senior quarterback Brandon Wakefield to sophomore wide receiver Blake Warring gave the Eagles a 21-0 lead that they carried into the half.
The Eagles (6-2, 4-0) extended their lead to 34-0 on a pair of Wakefield touchdown passes, before the Generals (4-4, 3-2) got on the board with a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Hunter Dawkins (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) to freshman wide receiver Jack Martin (Princeton, N.J./Hun School) with 1:56 remaining in the game.
W&L racked up 322 yards of total offense in the game, but could not offset three turnovers and four failed fourth down conversions in Bridgewater territory.
Junior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) completed 26-of-39 passes for 219 yards for W&L, but was picked off three times. Dawkins completed 6-of-9 passes for 55 yards and one score, while sophomore wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) caught 11 passes for 85 yards and rushed five times for 13 yards. Martin hauled in seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Chris Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y./LaSalle) led the W&L defense with eight tackles.
Bridgewater was led by Young's rushing effort. Wakefield completed 14-of-28 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, while junior defensive back Adrian Herndon and senior linebacker Cameron Garvin each posted seven tackles.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
