LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior midfielder Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines) scored two goals and added an assist to help propel the Washington and Lee field hockey team into the ODAC tournament semifinals with a 4-2 win over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Eagles (8-10) struck first on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Mandy Nixon (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 9:29 gone-by. With 2:11 remaining in the first half, the Generals (9-8) tied the game at 1-1 when junior midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored off a feed from Murphy.
Beall scored her second goal of the game just 51 seconds into the second stanza to give W&L a 2-1 lead. Senior forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) assisted on the goal. After Murphy scored at 41:32 to give the Generals a 3-1 advantage, Bridgewater sliced the deficit to 3-2 when Nixon scored at 48:56 but the Eagles wouldn't get any closer. Murphy iced the game with an unassisted goal at the 62:19 mark.
Generals' junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Ricmond, Va./Collegiate) made one save while junior netminder Frankee Waldron (Orrington, Maine/Bangor) stopped 11 shots for the Eagles.
W&L outshot Bridgewater, 17-3, and held a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Washington and Lee will face the winner of the Virginia Wesleyan/Randolph-Macon game in the ODAC semifinals on Fri., Nov. 5 at Lynchburg College. The time of the game is still to be determined.
