LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman defender Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) scored her second goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining to give the Washington and Lee field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon at the W&L turf field.
Korte gave the Generals (3-4) a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at the 10:25 mark. Both teams played tough on the defensive end of the field for the remainder of the half as W&L went into halftime with its 1-0 lead.
Mary Washington (6-3) knotted the score at 1-1 at 50:32 when freshman defender Maureen McGee (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) fed junior forward Brynn Maguire (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton), who fired the shot into the back of the Generals' goal.
With 4:36 left in the second half, W&L took advantage of a penalty corner to score the game-winning goal. Junior midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) passed the ball to Korte, who put it past Eagles junior goalkeeper Robyn Lankford (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax).
Lankford and Generals junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) both made nine saves.
Mary Washington had a 15-13 edge in shots and an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Hollins. The game begins at 6:00 pm.
