LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman defender Rhiannon Thomasson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored 1:28 into the second half to lift the Christopher Newport field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
After a scoreless first half in which each team fired off two shots, Thomasson broke the scoreless tie when she received a pass from senior forward Megan McCreedy (Stafford, Va./N. Stafford) and put the shot into the back of the Generals' net.
With the win, the Captains improved to 12-3 on the season while W&L fell to 7-8.
Generals' junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) played all 70 minutes in goal and made five saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Pelstring (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) stopped six shots for Christopher Newport.
Both teams got off seven shots while the Captains held a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
Washington and Lee closes out its regular season on Tuesday when it hosts Randolph-Macon Woman's College. The game begins at 5:30 pm.
