LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team played its third double-overtime game of the season and came away with a 1-1 tie against ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The game was a tight, defensive battle throughout the first half as both teams fired off only four shots. The second half had a similar look until W&L junior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) buried a shot into the top-right corner of the Yellow Jackets' net at 57:23.
Randolph-Macon (6-2-2, 1-1-2) evened the score at 1-1 when sophomore defender Brandon Sumpter (Vienna, Va./James Madison) fired a shot that was saved by Generals freshman goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). The ball then squirted out of Sheedy's hands in front of the net and was kicked in by senior midfielder Patrick Kimmel (Califon, N.J./West Morris Central) with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half.
The Generals (3-2-3, 1-0-3) had a chance to win the game in the first overtime but senior midfielder's Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) shot hit off the crossbar.
Sheedy finished with seven saves, while junior goalkeeper Nick Warner (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) stopped nine shots for Randolph-Macon.
Washington and Lee returns to the field on Tuesday at cross-town rival VMI. The game begins at 4:00 pm.
