W&L Field Hockey Shuts Out Sweet Briar, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored two goals to help lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Wednesday night at the W&L turf field.

The Generals (5-6, 4-2) spent a majority of the first half in the Vixens end of the field, but could not dent the scoreboard until Beall scored an unassisted goal at the 22:40 mark. W&L outshot Sweet Briar, 10-0, in the first 35 minutes.

The second stanza was similar to the first with W&L putting constant pressure on Sweet Briar's defense, but could not break the game open until Beall scored her second goal with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game. Junior defender Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) notched the assist on the goal.

Just over four minutes later, the Generals struck again when freshman midfielder Kay Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored an unassisted goal to give W&L a 3-0 lead.

W&L junior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) made one save to secure the shutout. Junior goalkeeper Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) stopped 15 shots for Sweet Briar (6-8, 1-5).

The Generals outshot the Vixens, 18-1, and had an 18-3 edge in penalty corners.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday at Randolph-Macon. The game begins at 11:30 am.
