W&L Women’s Basketball Drops 68-65 Decision To EMU

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite used a 38-35 first-half advantage to down Washington and Lee, 68-65, in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (4-5, 2-3), who trailed by no more than six in the second half and tied the game twice, pulled to within one point of the Royals (8-1, 5-1) with 66-65 showing on the scoreboard and 24 seconds remaining in the contest.

A quick foul by sophomore guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) with 23 seconds remaining put guard Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) on the line for a 1-and-1 situation, but the EMU sophomore was unable to convert the initial look.

Senior forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) grabbed the rebound for W&L, but sophomore guard Laura Ludholtz (Mount Crawford, Va./Fort Defiance) picked Feve for the steal and put the ball in EMU's possesion with 11 seconds remaining and the score still, 66-65.

Freshman guard Sara Otey (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton-Roads) fouled Luholtz to stop the clock with nine seconds remaining, allowing the Royals high-scorer to advance the visitors lead to 68-65.

Despite several shots in the final seconds, the Generals where unable to alter the scoreboard again.

Michaels led W&L with 19 points and finished second on the squad with nine rebounds. Otey contributed 13 points, dished out five assists and led the Generals with 11 rebounds for her first career double-double, while freshman forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards.

Eastern Mennonite's Ludholtz led all scorers with 27 points and grabbed a game-high six steals while Grandstaff and sophomore forward Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.
