W&L Women’s Basketball Falls To Roanoke, 67-65, In Ot

SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to send their ODAC contest with Roanoke into overtime on Saturday afternoon, but the Maroons outpaced the Generals in extra minutes and took the 67-65 decision.

The Maroons (2-5, 1-2) took a three-point lead into halftime and quickly extended that lead to 15 points with a 17-5 run to open the second stanza, notching the score at 44-20 with 10:47 left to play.

Washington and Lee (4-4, 2-2) responded to the challenge with a run of its own, using the next nine minutes to outscore Roanoke, 21-10, and pull the Maroons to within, 54-50, with 1:55 remaining in regulation.

Junior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) kept the momentum on the Generals' side as she picked Cindy McGraw for a steal with 45 seconds remaining and added three-points to W&L's comeback bid with a layup and foul shot compliments of a foul by Lindsay Reynolds.

Leading 54-53, Roanoke was unable to convert on its next trip down the court as Kayce Smith turned the ball over and gave the Generals another look at the hoop with 26 seconds remaining. On the next play senior forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) earned a trip to the charity stripe with 10 seconds left in regulation thanks to a foul by Reynolds. Michaels hit the first of her two looks to tie the game, but couldn't find the hoop a second time, sending the game into overtime.

Michaels led W&L with a season and game-high 28 points, while sophomore guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) added 16 points to the Generals' offensive efforts. Freshman forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) recorded her third double-double of the season, combining 11 points with a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Generals return to action Tuesday when they host ODAC foe Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
