W&L Men's Basketball Defeats Averett, 82-67

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Phil Landes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) scored a career-high 20 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds in leading Washington and Lee to an 82-67 win over Averett in men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (4-14) used a 16-2 run late in the first half to push a 23-16 lead with 6:33 remaining to a 39-19 advantage with 2:04 to play in leading 41-25 at the break.

The Cougars (0-15) started the second half with a 9-2 run to cut the W&L lead to seven points (43-36) with 15:31 remaining, but could get no closer despite the Generals hitting just 18-of-34 (.529) foul shots for the game.

Freshman guard Coleman Lyons (Atlanta, Ga./Phillips Academy) and senior forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) supplemented Landes' night with 14 points each. Freshman guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) added a career-high 10 rebounds.

Averett was paced by freshman forward Andrew Boor (Lovingston, Va./Nelson), who totaled 18 points. Junior guard Jerrod Harris (Danville, Va./George Washington) added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Roanoke for a 5:00 pm contest.
