W&L Women’s Basketball Defeats Mary Washington, 55-50

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) led four Generals in double-figures with a game-high 14 points as Washington and Lee defeated Mary Washington, 55-50, in women's basketball action on Monday evening at the Warner Center.

With 27 seconds remaining in the game, a pair of Eagle (4-9) foul shots from junior guard Laura Hanks (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) made it a one-possession game at 52-50 in the Generals' (8-7) favor.

Using only its fifth foul of the second half, Mary Washington stopped the clock with 25 seconds remaining, but a quick inbound play by W&L forced the Eagles to foul again, this time sending sophomore guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) to the line.

Feve hit her first look from the charity stripe but couldn't give the Lexington squad a two-possession lead as her second shot fell short. Sophomore guard Jenn Olinger (Warrenton, Va./Liberty) grabbed the ensuing rebound and an Eagle timeout stopped play with 19 seconds left on the game clock.

On the next play, junior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) swiped a steal from sophomore guard Diane Frantz (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and then earned a trip to the foul line with seven seconds remaining, when Frantz was forced to foul. Dannelly ended Mary Washington's chances to tie the game as she buried both foul shots.

Hunsinger combined a game-high 12 rebounds with her 14 points, while senior forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) also recorded a double-double after scoring 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Dannelly and freshman guard Sarah Otey (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton-Roads) each contributed 12 points in the victory.

Sophomore forward Lindsey Forbush (Clifton, Va./Fairfax) led the Eagles with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Hanks rounded out Mary Washington's double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it travels to Hollins for a 7:00 p.m. game.
