LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Hampden-Sydney built a 21-point (31-10) advantage in the first half and held on for a 69-56 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (3-11, 2-6) managed just two field goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game, but recovered to cut their deficit to 12 points (36-24) at the half.
W&L opened the second half on a 16-6 run to cut the lead to two points (42-40) with 13:31 to play, but the Tigers methodically built the lead back to as many as 18 points in the final two minutes of the game.
The Generals were paced by junior guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier), who totaled 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Freshman guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) added nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Hampden-Sydney (13-1, 6-1) was led by senior guard Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior guard Brian Gunn (Danville, Va./George Washington) notched 13 points, while senior center Mike Thompson (New Market, Md./Linganore) contributed 12 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
