LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) tallied a career-high 26 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to lead the Generals past Eastern Mennonite, 93-84, in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
W&L (3-9, 2-4) built a 41-27 halftime lead and extended the lead to 18 points (77-59) with 5:26 remaining in the game. However, the Royals (3-9, 1-5) began to foul, sending the Generals to the line 24 times in the final 5:05 in an attempt to make a comeback. The strategy worked as EMU cut the W&L lead to five points (87-82) with 28 seconds remaining, but the Generals hit six straight charity tosses in the last 26 seconds for the nine-point win.
In all, there were 58 fouls called in the contest, 29 on each team. W&L hit 24-of-38 charity tosses, including each of its final 10. The Royals hit 22-of-35 foul shots in the game.
Halkitis recorded his career-high total by hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts and 9-of-14 free throws. Junior guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) notched a season-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Sophomore forward David Will (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) added 16 points and six rebounds.
W&L shot a season-best 51.7 percent (30-58) from the field, including 9-of-17 (.529) from beyond the arc.
Freshman guard Jason Sager (Edinburg, Va./Central) paced five Royals in double-figures with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Junior forward E.J. Arrington (Staunton, Va./Stuarts Draft) totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman center Jason Lentz (Diana, W.Va./Webster County) notched 13 points and seven boards. Senior guard Mike Culen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and freshman guard JoMorrae Gordon (Sugar Grove, W.Va./Pendleton County) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
