LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) tied her season-high with a game-high 28 points as the Washington and Lee women's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 69-56, in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.
Down 20-21 with 4:56 remaining in the first half, the Generals (5-6, 3-4) went on an 18-4 run to end the half, taking a 38-25 lead into the halftime break. Watching W&L's advantage swell to 20 points in the second half, Virginia Wesleyan (3-7, 2-5) battled back to within 11 points in the final moments of the game, but would get no closer.
Michaels was also second on the team with eight rebounds while freshman forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) recorded her fifth double-double of the season after combining 15 points with a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) rounded out the Generals' double-digit scorers with 14 points. Junior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) was also among the W&L leaders with a season- and game-high seven assists.
Senior guard Devin Allen (Machipongo, Va./Northampton) led the Marlins with 12 points, while freshman guard Michelle Dove (San Antonio, Texas/Judson) was second on the squad with 10 points. Freshman center Nicole Thurston (Ramstein, Germany/American) rounded out the Virginia Wesleyan leaders with nine rebounds and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Generals return to action Tuesday when they host Hollins for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
