ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its nine-match winning-streak snapped with a 30-28, 27-30, 24-30, 30-27, 13-15 loss to Maryville in the opening day of the Emory Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Generals began the tournament with a 30-23, 30-27, 30-19 win over Transylvania.
In the win over Transylvania (0-13), the Generals were led by junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep), who amassed 14 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blockers Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and Ashleigh Overly (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) notched 20 digs. Sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 38 assists.
In the loss to Maryville (14-0), Chastain again led the way with 16 kills and 22 digs. Gaillard totaled 15 kills, while sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Acad.) registered 12 kills and 16 digs. Gladysz recorded 57 assists and 11 digs.
The Generals (9-1) return to action in the second day of the Emory Invitational on Saturday. W&L plays East Texas Baptist (11:30 am) and host Emory (2:00 pm).
