LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored a pair of goals in the second half to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team past Catawba College, 4-1, Friday evening.
The Generals (3-2) took a 1-0 lead into half-time thanks to a goal from junior forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), but Taffe's goals sandwiched around a score from junior midfielder Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines) broke the game wide for the home team.
Freshman defender Rebecca Hatchett (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Acad.) and junior defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) both recorded an assist in the victory.
The Lady Indians (0-10) prevented the shutout when sophomore defender Valerie Cullen (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) buried a penalty corner from senior midfielder Rachel Alosky (Windham, N.H./Salem) with 1:18 left in the game.
Splitting the time in goal for the Generals, sophomore Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) faced no shots while Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) made one save. Sophomore keeper Lauren Weitzel (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) made 12 saves for Catawba.
The Generals return to action Sun., Sept. 28, when they travel to ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
