LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team battled Eastern Mennonite to a 2-2 draw in the Generals' ODAC opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The Royals (4-1-2, 1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Darren Stauffer (Alberta, Canada/Western Mennonite) lofted a long shot from the corner of the 18-yard box and found the far netting at 35:17. The Generals' (3-0-1, 0-0-1) locked the score at 1-1 with less than a minute left in the first period. Junior defender Peter Miller (Towson, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) made a run from the back and buried a shot with 57 second left before the break.
The Generals struck first in the second half with a goal from freshman midfielder Kyle Garcia (Smyrna, Ga./Westminster) at 74:56, but the visitors locked the score back up four minutes later as Stauffer burried his second goal of the day.
Despite feverish intensity during the two overtime periods, neither squad could find the back of the net.
Washington and Lee held a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when the Generals host Hampden-Sydney. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
