LEXINGTON, Va. -- With the score locked 1-1 in the third overtime minute, Washington and Lee senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) buried a pass from sophomore link Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) to push the Generals past Roanoke, 2-1, in ODAC field hockey action on Wednesday night.
After watching Roanoke (4-1, 2-1) take a 1-0 lead in the first half, the Generals (1-2, 1-0) used several key changes of possessions to set up their equalizing offense. Junior forward Kristen Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) notched the score at 1-1 when she received a pass from sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends School) and beat the Maroons' keeper at the 43:32 mark.
The Generals and the Maroons both recorded 12 penalty corners in the match, while W&L held a narrow 13-12 advantage in shots.
Splitting the time in goal for the Generals, sophomore Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) made two saves and sophomore Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) made five stops. Junior keeper Beth Lichty (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's) played all 73 minutes for Roanoke, making nine saves.
