W&L Women's Soccer Opens 2003 Season With 4-1 Win Over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team opened its 2003 season with a 4-1 victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Bridgewater on Saturday.

Generals (1-0, 1-0) freshman Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored a pair of goals and dished out an assist in her collegiate debut, while fellow freshman Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) added a goal and an assist in her first college appearance. Senior Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) also scored a goal and tallied an assist in the win. Heather Rogers (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) rounded out W&L's scoring with an assist.

Kimberly Matthews upended the W&L shutout with the Eagles' (1-4, 0-1) lone goal.

Washington and Lee held a 25-4 advantage in shots, and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) needed only one stop in goal for the Generals, while freshman Lisa Belella made 11 saves for the Eagles.

The Generals return to action tomorrow, September 14 when they host Chowan. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
