LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) hit a layup with 11 seconds remaining to lift Washington and Lee to a 63-62 win over Lynchburg in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The lead changed hand seven times in the final 2:51 of the game and neither team led by more than six points at any time during the contest.
Junior forward Josh Cobbs (Danville, Va./Tunstall) gave the Hornets their final lead on a pair of free throws with 37 seconds remaining, setting up Stuart's heroics. LC had one final shot, but Cobbs' 8-foot shot in the lane bounded away and the Generals claimed the victory to end a nine-game losing streak.
Washington and Lee (6-15, 3-12) was led by senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon), who scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Ryan Flynn (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) notched a career-high 13 points, while Stuart tallied 12 points and a career-high seven assists.
Lynchburg (6-17, 3-13) was paced by sophomore center Ryan Pehanik's (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) 18-point effort. Cobbs recorded 12 points, while freshman forward Reed Fairchild (Spotsylvania, Va./Massaponax) added nine points and eight rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
