W&L Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Hampden-Sydney, 67-60

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team trailed second-ranked Hampden-Sydney by just four points (61-57) with under one minute remaining, but a three-pointer by W&L sophomore guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) went in-and-out with 43 seconds remaining and the Tigers survived, 67-60.

Hampden-Sydney (21-0, 15-0) led by just two points (33-31) at the half, but pushed their advantage to 10 (58-48) with 7:01 remaining. However, the Generals clawed their way back with a 9-0 run over the next 2:21 to cut the H-SC lead to one point (58-57) with 4:40 remaining. From there, Hampden-Sydney junior guard Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) hit a 12-foot jumper and a free throw with 3:08 remaining and neither team scored until the Tigers sunk 6-of-8 free throws in the final 42 seconds to ice the game.

McClure led W&L (5-15, 2-12) with 22 points, while senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) contributed 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) added 10 points and six rebounds.

The Tigers were paced by 15 points from Monroe and junior guard Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton). Junior forward Jason Holman (Amelia, Va./Amelia County) chipped in with 10 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Lynchburg College for a 3:00 pm contest.
