BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater freshman forward Jessica Young hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining to lift the Eagles to a 54-53 win over visiting Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Monday evening.
The Generals (1-3, 1-1) assumed a 53-52 lead with 1:24 remaining in the game as junior forward Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) nailed a three-pointer. Both teams traded possessions before Young was fouled in a loose-ball scramble and hit the game-winning charity tosses.
W&L trailed 34-28 at the half and by as many as 10 points in the early moments of the second half before coming back to tie the game at 48-48 on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Sarah Otey (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton-Roads) with 7:41 remaining in the game.
The Generals were paced by freshman forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School), who tallied 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Otey notched 12 points, while senior forward Sarah Michaels (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Bridgewater (2-0, 1-0) was led by freshman guard Katy Herr's 17 points and nine rebounds. Young recorded 13 points and senior guard Marie Bolton added 10 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
