Generals Football Downed by Emory & Henry, 34-16

EMORY, Va. --  Emory & Henry scored 34 unanswered points to down Washington and Lee, 34-16, in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (2-7, 1-5) opened the scoring at 8:23 in the first quarter off a 37-yard field goal by freshman placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) in W&L's first possession.

The Generals brought the Wasps' (4-5, 2-3) game opening drive of 23 yards to an end as senior defensive lineman Andrew Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cinncinati Country Day) tackled rushing Emory & Henry freshman quarterback Todd Woods and forced the fumble. Junior linebacker Wes Kimmel (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) recovered the ball and returned it 11 yards to the Wasps' 46.

Emory & Henry responded at 3:47 in the first quarter as Woods connected with freshman wide receiver Jerad Jackson for a 44-yard touchdown pass. Junior running back Chris Miller pushed the home team's lead to 13-3 by halftime with a pair of touchdown runs in the second quarter, and returned after the break for his third touchdown at 4:26 in the third quarter. Woods capped off the Wasps scoring at 2:47 in the third when he connected with freshman wide receiver Brennan Stewart for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

The Generals narrowed the Emory & Henry lead in the fourth quarter as senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw a two-yard touchdown pass to sophomore running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) at 11:42. Sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished the game's scoring with W&L's final touchdown, an 11-yard pass to junior wide receiver John Barnwell (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) with 4:18 left in the contest.

Tweardy led the Generals' offense, completing 11-of-21 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. Junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Autin) led the W&L defense with 13 tackles.

Woods completed 15-of-22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns for Emory & Henry, while Miller carried 37 times for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Anthony Boyd paced the Wasps' defense with 10 tackles.

Washington and Lee wraps up the 2003 season next Saturday as the Generals host Greensboro. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
