ASHLAND, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team began the defense of its 2002 ODAC Championship with a 30-24, 30-18, 30-17 win over eighth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament on Friday evening at Randolph-Macon.
The Generals (32-3) were led by junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 12 kills, five digs and four aces. Sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched seven kills, while junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded eight kills and four aces. Sophomore middle blockers Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) added seven kills and six blocks respectively. Sophomore Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) rounded out the W&L leaders with 33 assists and five aces.
The loss ended Virginia Wesleyan's season at 17-10 overall.
Washington and Lee will face fourth-seeded Roanoke on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The championship match will be played at 3:00 p.m.
