W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Roanoke, 1-0, In ODAC First Round

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored the game-winning goal with 8:31 remaining to propel the second-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team past seventh-seeded Roanoke, 1-0, in ODAC tournament first-round action on Saturday afternoon.

With time ticking away, freshman forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) blasted a shot off the post that rebounded back to Hope, who promptly buried the ball to give the Generals (13-1-2) the go-ahead goal.

Junior Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) played all 90 minutes in the W&L goal, making four stops on the day.

Sophomore goalie Jess Simmers (Downingtown, Pa./Villa Maria) covered the Roanoke goal for 86:11, making 13 saves. Sophomore Emma Jones (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) stepped into the Maroon net for the final 3:49, but didn't need to make a save.

The Generals return to action in the ODAC tournament semifinals, when they will face third-seeded Lynchburg. That game will be played at a date and time TBA.
