SALEM, Va. -- The seventh-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team played second-seeded Roanoke to a 1-1 draw, then advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals on penalty kicks (3-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (7-5-3) took a 1-0 lead as freshman midfielder Kyle Garcia (Smyrna, Ga./Westminster) scored unassisted at the 29:37 mark.
W&L held the lead until 2:38 remained in regulation, when Roanoke sophomore midfielder Donny Smith found the net unassisted. From there, the two teams played through a pair of scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, setting up the penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalie Michael Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) stopped a pair of Maroon (10-4-3) penalty kicks and finished the game with five saves over 110 minutes.
Junior Harper Thorsen played all 110 minutes in goal for Roanoke, notching one save.
For the game, the Maroons held a 13-6 advantage in shots and an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. There was a total of 48 fouls whistled and seven yellow cards were issued for the match.
The Generals will face sixth-seeded Guilford in the semifinals on Friday at the highest remaining seed. The time is also TBA.
