W&L Football Succumbs to Bridgewater, 28-3

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Bridgewater scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away for a 28-3 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Eagles (7-1, 4-0) struck on the game's opening possession as sophomore fullback Robert Matthews (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) scored on a 40-yard touchdown run.

W&L (2-6, 1-4) climbed to within 7-3 with 7:49 remaining in the first half as freshman placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) booted a school-record-tying 47-yard field goal and the teams went into the half with the Eagles leading 7-3.

Bridgewater began to pull away in the third quarter as sophomore tailback Marcus Washington (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) produced a 14-yard touchdown run with 10:14 remaining in the period. Freshman tailback Winston Young (Brampton, Ont./Boyd Anderson) put BC up 21-3 on a 2-yard touchdown reception with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter and sophomore wide receiver Brian Awkard (Afton, Va./Nelson County) added a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) led the W&L offense, completing 15-of-36 passes for 159 yards. He was sacked six times. Defensively, junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) notched 11 tackles.

Bridgewater was paced offensively by Washington, who rushed 14 times for 85 yards and one touchdown. Matthews gained 73 yards on nine carries, while junior quarterback Brandon Wakefield (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) completed 17-of-28 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
