LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored two goals to lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon in ODAC tournament first-round action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Jessica Yoke (Newport News, Va./Menchville) put the Yellow Jackets (7-10) up 1-0 when she scored off an assist by sophomore midfielder Erin DiDomenico (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) at 11:30 of the first half.
Taffe evened the score for the Generals (10-8) when she scored her first goal with 2:11 left in the first half. She then gave W&L a 2-1 lead with her second goal at 29:43 in the second half. Sophomore midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) pushed the W&L lead to 3-1, notching the eventual game-winner at 25:38.
With 46 second remaining, sophomore midfielder Carrie Peirce (Easton, Md./Easton) put Randolph-Macon on the board a second time, but the W&L lead proved too much for the Yellow Jackets' late-game rally.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the Generals' goal. Harrison started and made two saves, while Gelinas played in the second half and made four saves.
Senior goalie Samantha Molden (Easton, Md./Easton) played all 70 minutes for Randolph-Macon, making 14 saves.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they take on second-seeded Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC tournament semifinals, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
