LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used a pair of early goals to outpace Randolph-Macon, 2-1, in ODAC field hockey action on Tuesday evening.
The victory secures the Generals (9-7, 6-3) a home contest in the first round of the ODAC tournament. They will host a yet to be determined opponent on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Sophomore midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored an unassisted goal just 5:51 into the match to give the Generals a 1-0 lead. At 23:22 sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends School) sank an unassisted goal of her own to give W&L all they would need to secure the win.
The Yellow Jackets (7-8, 4-5) made a late-game push as forward Lyndsay Edginton (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Acad.) off an assist from sophomore midfielder Erin DiDomenico (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) with 4:18 left to play. Despite a flurry of shots in the waning minutes, neither team was able to alter the scoreboard again.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the W&L goal. Gelinas started and made two saves, while Harrison took over duties in the second half and made five stops.
Senior Samantha Molden (Easton, Md./Easton) played all 70 minutes in the Randolph-Macon goal, making 10 saves.
The Generals return to action tomorrow, when they finish a game with Eastern Mennonite. That game was suspended due to lightening on Tues., Oct. 14, with 16:30 remaining in the game and EMU leading 4-1. The game will pick up from that point and be played to completion. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
