W&L Field Hockey Downs St. Mary's (Md.), 5-4

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Freshman forward Amy Brown (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) scored the game-winning goal with 3:07 remaining, as the Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated St. Mary's (Md.), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon.

In a game that saw four lead changes, the Generals (8-7) tied the score as junior defender Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored off an assist by sophomore defender Katharine Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends School) at 56:02. At the 66:53 mark, Brown buried the game-winning tally off an assist by freshman forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby), giving W&L its second victory of the weekend.

Senior Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), junior midfielder Kitt Murphy (New York, N.Y./St. Catherines [Va.]) and sophomore midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) all scored a goal on the day.

Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the Generals' goal. Harrison started and made seven saves, while Gelinas took over in the second half and made one save.

Whitney Fahrman played all 70 minutes in the Seahawks (9-8) goal, making five stops.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday, when the Generals host Randolph-Macon. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
