Generals Football Topped by Guilford, 34-7

GREENSBORO, N.C. --  Guilford College surged out to a 14-0 lead in the opening 5:46 of the game and extended its lead late for a 34-7 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers (2-5, 1-2) opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Micah Rushing 4:52 into the game, then extended to 14-0 on a 36-yard fumble return by junior cornerback Jason Allen just 54 seconds later.

After a 37-yard field goal by GC freshman placekicker Travis Frazier on the opening possession of the second half, the Generals (2-5, 1-3) climbed to within 17-7 with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

However, Guilford added a 2-yard touchdown reception by freshman tight end CJ Graham, a 36-yard field goal by Frazier and a 20-yard fumble return for a touchdown by freshman linebacker Mario Paylor in the fourth period for the 27-point win.

Dean led the Generals' offense, completing 17-of-35 passes for 201 yards.  He was picked off two times.

Sophomore running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) rushed 21 times for 80 yards, while junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) caught four passes for 51 yards.  Sophomore defensive lineman Liam Murray (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) led the W&L defense with 11 tackles, including two for a loss.

Junior quarterback Josh Smith paced the Quaker offense, completing 6-of-13 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown and rushing nine times for 46 yards.  Senior running back Brian Caye added 77 yards on 19 carries.  Paylor led the defense with nine tackles and his fourth-quarter touchdown.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm contest.
