W&L Football Scores Come-From-Behind Win Over Catholic

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored 24 unanswered points in the final 16:06 of the game for a 31-27 win over Catholic in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (2-3, 1-1) trailed 27-7 with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter, but climbed to within 27-14 on a 21-yard scoring strike from sophomore quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) to junior wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) with 1:06 remaining in the period.

After a Cardinal (1-4, 1-1) punt with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter, Tweardy again led the Generals on a scoring drive, this time an 11-play, 88-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Hunter Whitfield (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Central) with 4:40 remaining in the game.

On the ensuing Catholic possession, junior quarterback Pat Truxillo (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) was intercepted by freshman cornerback Rob Rain (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) who returned the ball 12 yards to the CUA 6-yard line, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Michael Lackett (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township) on the game's next play. The PAT was good, giving the Generals a 28-27 lead.

After the Cardinals were forced into a four-and-out on their own 11-yard line with 1:42 remaining in the game, freshman placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) capped the scoring with a 27-yard field goal with 1:19 remaining in the game. From there, the W&L defense held again on four downs, solidifying the win.

Tweardy led the Generals, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Lackett carried 11 times for 27 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 69 yards, while Callaham hauled in five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Junior linebacker Lloyd Wilson (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) led the W&L defense with 10 tackles.

Truxillo competed 17-of-35 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals. He was intercepted four times on the afternoon. Junior running back Ed Smith (Wallington, N.J./Paramus Catholic) rushed 21 times for 59 yards and two touchdowns, while junior tight end Kevin McNulty (Elkins Park, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) caught five passes for 92 yards. Senior linebacker John Blattner (Lutherville, Md./Loyola) paced the CUA defense with nine tackles and a sack.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
