W&L Men's Basketball Falls to Guilford, 57-55

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore guard Clarence Martin (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) recorded a steal and layup with 20 seconds remaining to lift Guilford to a 57-55 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals (3-4, 0-3) led by as many as 13 points (25-12) in the first half, but the Quakers (3-5, 1-3) stormed back to knot the game at 33-33 at the break.

W&L again took control of the contest, posting a 46-39 lead with 11:58 remaining, but Guilford again surged back, going on an 11-0 run over the next 3:53 to assume a 50-46 lead with 8:05 left. The game remained nip-and-tuck for the duration, leading up to Martin's steal and game-winning basket.

Washington and Lee, who shot 52 percent in the first half and just 24 percent in the second, was led by junior forward Hamill Jones (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), who tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) scored 12 points, while sophomore guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) added 10 points.

Guilford was led by sophomore center Brandon Clifford (Greensboro, N.C./Page), who scored 14 points and seven rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday evening as it hosts Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
