W&L Swimming Teams Fall To Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were both defeated by squads from Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals' women's squad fell to 7-3 overall this year after dropping a 162.5-79.5 decision, while the men's team fell to 4-5 overall with its 134-106 loss.

The Gettysburg women (5-0) won 11 of the 13 events, including both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard free relay, to cruise to the victory. Senior Heather Gallagher (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) was the lone two-event winner for the Bullets, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.51) and 100-yard butterfly (1:00.92).

The W&L women were led by senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who won the 200 Breast in 2:35.85 and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), who won the 100 Free, touching in 55.73.

The GC men (3-1) were paced by senior Tom Leupold (Richwood, N.J./Clearview Regional) who won the 100 Breast (1:03.78) and the 100 Free (50.23). Five other members of the Bullets' men's squad also won individual events.

Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) was the top swimmer for W&L, picking up wins in the 100-yard backstroke (53.80) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.45). Senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) chipped in with a win in the 50 Free (22.49), while junior Drew Catanese (Southhampton, Mass./Suffield) won the 100 Fly (55.84).

The Generals' women's team is back in the pool again tomorrow as they travel to Radford for a 12:00 pm meet. The men will return to action in a dual meet next Saturday morning (10:00 am) at Johns Hopkins.
