HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore guard Ian McClure (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 22 seconds to put the game on ice as the Washington and Lee men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite, 75-72, on Wednesday evening at the EMU Student Commons.
The Generals (4-6, 1-4 ODAC) opened up a 15-point first-half lead (40-25), before the Royals closed to within seven at the intermission.
Just 1:30 into the second half, though, W&L was back out on top by a 49-35 count. However, with 10:01 left to play, the Royals (2-11, 0-6 ODAC) went on a 10-0 run to establish their final lead of the game, 63-61. From that point W&L outscored EMU, 14-9, to secure the victory and end a five-game losing skid.
The Royals outshot W&L percentage-wise (50.4 to 43.7 percent), but turned the ball over 20 times, compared to just 14 giveaways for the Generals.
Freshman forward David Will (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) led four Generals in double figures with career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (12). Senior forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon), sophomore guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) and McClure were the others in double-digits with 15, 13 and 13 points, respectively.
Jeremy Newman was the leading scorer for the Royals, finishing with 18 points. E.J. Arrington chipped in 14, while Bryan Williams added 13.
The Generals will be back on the court Saturday afternoon when they travel to Lynchburg for a 3:00 pm game.
