Washington And Lee Women's Soccer Defeats Sweet Briar, 9-0, For First Win

AMHERST, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team evened its record at 1-1 overall and in the ODAC by defeating Sweet Briar, 9-0, in ODAC women's soccer action on Monday afternoon in Amherst, Va.

Sophomore defender Kelley Zagol (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) opened the scoring for the Generals as she took a flip throw-in from senior midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central) and found the back of the net in the third minute.

Sophomore forward Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), Thomas, freshman midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) and sophomore forward Molly Plummer (New Orleans, La./Sacred Heart) also scored in the opening 45 minutes to stake the Generals to a 5-0 lead at the half.

Hope and Von Sternberg paced the W&L offense with two goals and one assist each, while Thomas tallied one goal and two assists.

Sophomore goalkeepers Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) and Abigail Pfeffer (Essex, Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School) combined on the shutout for W&L, who outshot SBC, 24-0, on the afternoon.

Sweet Briar (1-4, 0-2) senior goalkeeper Margaret Van Hook notched 10 saves in goal for the Vixens.

The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
