LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team began its 2002 season with a pair of wins in the first day of the W&L Volleyball Invitational. In their first match, the Generals defeated Goucher College, 30-11, 30-14, 30-20, before downing Shenandoah, 30-17, 30-6, 30-16, in the nightcap.
In game one, the Generals were paced by sophomore outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep), who tied a school record with nine aces. She also tallied eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recorded a team-high 22 assists.
The Golphers (0-5) were led by freshman outside hitter Sandi Stewart (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline), who notched 16 digs.
Against Shenandoah (3-4), Chastain guided the Generals (2-0) to the win with 14 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) registered 11 kills. Lux amassed a team-high 29 assists.
The Hornets were paced by sophomore outside hitter Hannah Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar), who notched three kills and 11 digs. Junior setter Lesley Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) registered seven assists.
In Saturday's first semifinal, the Generals will face Christopher Newport at 9:30 am. Catholic then faces Shenandoah in the second semifinal at 11:30 am. The championship match is slated for 3:00 pm.
