ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team dropped its two matches in the second and final day of play Saturday at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga. In its first match, W&L was upended by Southwestern University, 36-34, 30-17, 30-28, before falling to tournament host Emory University by scores of 30-27, 24-30, 30-22, 31-29.
In the match with Southwestern (12-5), freshman middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) was the pace-setter for the Generals with 11 kills and four blocks. Fellow freshman middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) chipped in with eight kills and five blocks while freshman libero Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 19 digs. Sophomore setter Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) notched 27 assists and eight digs.
Sophomore outside hitters Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) and Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) led the Generals against Emory (16-3), combining for 33 kills and 36 digs. Gaillard totaled 11 kills and Lux tallied 47 assists.
Gaillard was the lone player to make the All-Tournament team for W&L (13-4), which went 1-3 for the two-day tournament
W&L returns to action on Tuesday when they host ODAC-rival Sweet Briar at the Warner Center for a 6:30 pm match.
