W&L Women's Soccer Knocks Off North Carolina Wesleyan, 2-1

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Freshman midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored two goals to propel the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to victory over North Carolina Wesleyan, 2-1, Saturday in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Von Sternberg staked the Generals (5-1-2) to a 1-0 halftime lead when her shot, off a pass from sophomore forward Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), found the back of the Battling Bishops' net at 41:38.

The score remained 1-0 into the 83rd minute when North Carolina Wesleyan's (6-3) Camil Velazquez scored to even the contest at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Hope again fed Von Sternberg whose goal made it 2-1, Generals.

In the Generals' net, sophomore goalie Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) logged 90 minutes, making one save to preserve the victory.

Rachael Whicker made five saves for the Battling Bishops, who were outshot by a 12-6 margin.

The Generals next match is at home on the Liberty Hall Fields this Wednesday at 4:00 pm when they host ODAC-rival Emory & Henry.
