SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke's Kelly Lyons scored with 4:57 left in the first overtime to lift the Maroons to victory over visiting Washington and Lee, 2-1, in field hockey action Wednesday evening in Salem, Va.
W&L (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) sophomore forward Grace Barlow (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) opened the scoring when her shot found the back of the cage with 23:54 remaining in the first half.
However, the Maroons (6-2, 5-0 ODAC) answered, making it 1-1 three minutes later when Kaylin Leavitt's shot wound its way into the Generals' goal. From then on, the two teams were scoreless until Lyons' overtime goal broke the deadlock and lifted the Maroons to the 2-1 victory.
In the W&L cage, freshman goaltender Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate Boys School) played the first half, while fellow freshman Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) played the second half and overtime. The two combined to turn away 10 Roanoke shots.
Steph Calabro earned the victory in the Roanoke goal.
The Generals will be back in action Friday evening when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm match.
