GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee junior quarterback Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) faked a spike and then connected with sophomore wide receiver Taylor Callaham (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining to give the Generals a 31-30 victory over Guilford in ODAC football action Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.
W&L (1-1, 1-0) stopped the Quakers on a fourth-and-two play on the W&L 20-yard line with 1:30 remaining in the game as junior linebacker Ben Krasnoff (Towson, Md./Towson) corralled Guilford running back Brandon Lockhart for a two-yard loss. The Generals then drove 78 yards in seven plays for the game-winning score.
Guilford (1-2, 0-1) assumed a 30-18 lead with 11:18 remaining in the fourth quarter as defensive back Sherod Long intercepted Dean and rumbled 58 yards for a touchdown.
The Generals began their comeback as senior running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to cut the GC lead to 30-25 with 7:26 remaining.
The Washington and Lee offense was led by Sullivan, who rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. He also tallied two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown, returned two kickoffs for 59 yards and two punts for 21 yards in amassing 294 all-purpose yards. Dean completed 10-of-23 attempts for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Callaham caught four passes for 48 yards and one score. Krasnoff led the W&L defense with 13 tackles.
Guilford quarterback Josh Smith completed 13-of-22 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris McKinney grabbed seven passes for 99 yards and one score, while linebacker Wes Kidd led the Quakers' defense with 14 tackles and a sack.
Washington and Lee returns to action on next Saturday as it travels to Centre College for a 1:30 pm contest.
