DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened the first day of competition at the Centre College Tournament with wins over Averett (30-24, 30-23, 30-25) and Centre (14-30, 23-30, 30-28, 30-20, 15-8) on Saturday afternoon.
In the win over Averett (5-5), the Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep), who recorded a career-high 17 kills. Freshman middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) tallied nine kills and six blocks, while senior outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and freshman libero Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) each notched 10 digs. Sophomore setter Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 36 assists.
Against Centre (5-4), freshman middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) paced the Generals (6-1) with 14 kills and six blocks. Chastain totaled 10 kills, while Gibson registered nine kills and four blocks. Kimmel added 14 digs and Lux amassed 38 assists.
The Generals are in action again on Sunday in the second day of the tournament. W&L faces Transylvania at 10:30 am and Rhodes at 1:30 pm.
