FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team opened the Methodist Tournament with a 1-1 tie against North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Battling Bishops (4-2-1) got on the board first when Drew Martin scored a breakaway goal off an assist from Michael Brown at the 52:00 mark.
The Generals (0-2-1) responded exactly seven minutes later as sophomore defender Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored unassisted off of a deflection. The two teams would then play the final 31:00 of regulation and two 10:00 overtimes scoreless.
Senior Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) played all 110 minutes in in goal, making 10 saves.
George Frangos notched 11 saves in goal for North Carolina Wesleyan. For the game, the Generals outshot the Battling Bishops, 22-18.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Sunday as the Generals take on tournament host Methodist. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
